I'm not quite sure what I'll write here.  This is my first opportunity at self expression.  . . .   I know :-).  I'll retitle this "Why I Think People Don't Think"

Why I Think People Don't Think

It always baffles me when people look around at others, and complain of failings that inherent in themselves.  The other day I had a lovely conversation with a friend of mine, M.  Her position was that if people would just pull their head out of their preconcieved notions, the choice in the US presidential election would be blindingly obvious.  We talked for about an hour, about how people will cede control over their opinions to others.

My thought was that people simply aren't able to think about everything equally.  Some people aren't interested in politics and for them indepth though about such matters is an impossibility. I think that this category probably covers most people.  (I'm like this about sports.  No matter how hard I try I simply can't build an interest in any organized sport.  For me an indepth conversation about the skills of Michael Jordan or Larry Byrd would be an impossibility) These people cede control of their thoughts to others, so that they won't have to think about difficult subjects.

A lot of people give control of their thoughts to religious leaders.  This is great if your following Mother Teresa.  Anyone less perfect and you're in trouble.  If the preacher says that such and such is bad, then its bad.   Other people will find one loud vioce and follow him.  M said this is how Bill O'Reilly has gained his following.

Anyway we had a pleasant evening of conversation.  A thing so precious and rare that I will treasure it greatly.  I'd love to know your thoughts on the subject "Why do people give their thoughts to others?"
